Where Cable Loss Comes From?

Conductor Loss: The current will crowd into the conductor surface because of the skin effect, a Silver plated conductor(RG142, RG400 ) will have a better low loss performace compared with a bare copper conductor.

Stranded conductor will increase the cable loss, although it will make the cable more flexible.

Dieletric Loss: A lower density dielectric will have a better low loss performance, Foam PE(Low Loss Cable), Low Density PTFE(Most test cable), or air dielectric(1/2" Plenum cable) are some of the popular way to lower the cable loss.

Braiding: A good braiding structure will significantly lower the cable loss, RG142, RG400 have 2 Silver plated Copper braid, and Low Loss series cable have Bonded Aluminum foil and Tinned copper braid. Because of the skin effect, a Silver plated braiding will have a lower loss compared with bare copper braid.

RN200 vs RG58: RN200 have a much better Low Loss performance because of braid:
Bonded Aluminum foil + Tinned copper braid vs Brass braid.
RG58 vs RG142: RG142 have a better Low Loss performance because: 1, RG142 have 2 braid vs RG58 only 1 braid. 2, RG142 Conductor and Braid are both silver plated.
RG142 vs RG400:
RG142 have a better Low Loss performance because its 1 core conductor, while RG400 is stranded.

How to choose the Cable?

Sometimes it doesn't matter even the Cable Loss is large, for example, in short length such as 6 inch, 1 ft, and lower frequency application, Low Loss Cable RN200, RG142, RG400 normally will much cost more than a RG58 cable, it's unnecessary if the RG58 is OK to go.

For longer cable assembly, a larger diameter Low Loss cable will have a better performance with the same cable structure, however, it will have the larger weight, the higher cost, and the less flexibility.
